State Senator Sam S.F. Caligiuri is in his first term representing Connecticut’s 16th District, comprising Southington and Wolcott and parts of Cheshire and Waterbury.
Senator Caligiuri is an Assistant Minority Leader of the Senate Republican Caucus, and serves as a member of five legislative committees. Senator Caligiuri is the leading, or Ranking, Republican Senator serving on the Select Committee on Aging and a Ranking Member of the General Law Committee. In addition, he serves on the Elementary and Secondary Education Committee, the Internship Committee, and the Regulation Review Committee.
Prior to joining the State Senate, Senator Caligiuri served as a member of the Waterbury Board of Aldermen from 1997 to 2002, and as the Board’s President from 2000 to 2002. Senator Caligiuri also served as Acting Mayor of Waterbury from July 2001 to January 2002. During his tenure as Acting Mayor, Senator Caligiuri led one of the most aggressive municipal ethics reforms in the state and negotiated collective bargaining agreements that saved taxpayers millions of dollars. Senator Caligiuri served as Deputy Legal Counsel in the Office of the Governor of Connecticut from 1995 to 1997.
Senator Caligiuri is a partner in the law firm of Day Pitney LLP. In 2002, Senator Caligiuri was the recipient of the Connecticut Law Tribune’s Impact Award, and he has been selected a Fellow of the Connecticut Bar Foundation. He has also served as an adjunct faculty member of the University of Connecticut School of Law. Senator Caligiuri received a B.A. from Boston College, an M.A.R. from Yale Divinity School, and a J.D. from The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law.
Senator Caligiuri has been active in numerous civic organizations. Currently, he serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Greater Waterbury. He has also served as a member of Governor Rell’s Commission on Education Finance, as a Trustee of the Connecticut Community Foundation, and as a director of the Greater Waterbury Chamber of Commerce, Connecticut Legal Services, and the Governor’s Prevention Partnership.
Senator Caligiuri is a life-long Waterbury resident, where he continues to live with his wife, Lori, and their children, Grace and Owen.
