Senator Kevin Witkos (R- 8) is serving his first term in the State Senate. He represents the 8th District communities of Avon, Simsbury, Canton, New Hartford, Barkhamsted, Hartland, Colebrook, Norfolk, Granby, Torrington, and Harwinton.
Prior to being elected to the State Senate, Senator Witkos served three terms in the State House of Representatives where he served as ranking member on the legislature’s Insurance and Real Estate Committee as well as the Education and Public Safety committees.
Senator Witkos now serves as Assistant Minority Leader of the State Senate and is ranking member on the General Assembly’s Energy & Technology and General Law committees. He also sits on the Legislative Management and Public Health committees.
During his first term in the House of Representatives, Senator Witkos focused heavily on an issue close to his heart; education. Before serving in the House of Representatives, Senator Witkos served as Vice Chairman of the Canton Board of Education. And as a legislator, he took up the cause of students and school boards across the state by introducing key improvements to school testing standards.
Prior to being elected to the State House of Representatives, Senator Witkos distinguished himself by his involvement in his community. Most notably, he served as Vice Chairman of the Canton Board of Education, and is a former Chief of the Canton Volunteer Fire Department. He has also served as the Capitol Area Substance Abuse Council Representative, and is President of the Local Chapter of AFSCME Council #15. He’s also a former Canton Junior and Senior High School Girls Varsity and Boys Junior Varsity Soccer Coach.
Senator Witkos received his Associates in Science at Tunxis Community College in 1996. He graduated from the Connecticut Municipal Police Academy in 1989, and the New England Institute of Law Enforcement Management, UMASS in 2002. He received his Bachelor of Arts in General Studies with a focus on Law and Society from the University of Connecticut in 2007.
Senator Witkos proudly serves as a sergeant in the Canton Police Department. He has worked with the Department since 1989.
