$150,000 STATE GRANT TO NEW CANAAN

Senator William H. Nickerson (R-Greenwich) announced that the State Bond Commission today unanimously approved a $150,000 grant to New Canaan for the rehabilitation of the trail system at Waveny Park. The grant falls under the Small Town Economic Assistance Program, known as “STEAP.” The total cost of the trail rehabilitation is estimated at $600,000.

Waveny Park is a 300 acre municipal park used for active and passive recreation, known as the “crown jewel” of New Canaan. The trail system circumnavigates the park by a perimeter loop which connects the park to the surrounding schools, YMCA and the neighborhood. The approximately 4 1/2 mile long trail system passes though all of the Park features and is the site of numerous cross-country races. The rehabilitation project will involve removing the entire wood chip surface and replacing it with a regraded surface over gravel bedding which will improve drainage, decrease soil erosion and preserve the existing wetlands.

Nickerson said, “I am delighted that the State will be a partner with the Town of New Canaan in improving this outstanding recreational facility. I thank Governor Rell for her decision to make this possible. The Governor announced today that she was faced with the task of pairing $50 million in original STEAP applications down to the $20 million allocated today, and I appreciate her including New Canaan”.

“I also want to thank First Selectman Jeb Walker for his initiative in applying for this STEAP grant and the persuasive job he did in making the case for this grant.”
