| The Finance Committee today approved
state bonding of $2,000,000 for remediation of the brownfields
at the Cos Cob Power Plant and $1,500,000 for renovation and
new construction at the Bruce Museum. This is part of the
annual bond bill which now goes to the House and Senate for
approval. Ultimate allocation of the bonding requires approval
of the Bond Commission. Senator
William H. Nickerson, Representative Livvy R. Floren, and
Representative Lile R. Gibbons (R-Greenwich), all members
of the Finance committee, voted for these items and issued
the following joint statement, “The brownfield remediation
funding is for Phase Three of the power plant process and
is primarily for capping the site with approximately four
feet of soil. Earlier the state had participated on a 50/50
basis with the town on Phase One of the remediation which
involved demolition of the power plant itself. Phase Two
remediation included removing PCB and PAH contamination
utilizing a Federal Environmental Protection Agency grant.
The grant regarding the Bruce Museum
will go toward partial funding of a major renovation and
rebuilding of the Museum which would greatly enlarge new
exhibition space, teaching space and the science gallery.
The Museum’s goal is to expand its reach beyond Greenwich
to become a regional cultural attraction.”
Representative Dolly Powers (R-Greenwich)
also supports both grants.
