Senator William H. Nickerson (R-Greenwich) today reminded shoppers of Tax Free Week, beginning Sunday August 20 and running through Saturday August 26 in time for “back to school”.

During this week all clothing and footwear costing under $300 will be free of the state’s 6% sale tax.  The standard exemption is $50.

Nickerson said, “I want to remind shoppers to take advantage of this opportunity.  This is the seventh year it has been in effect and it has proved very popular.  Total shopper sales tax savings were $2 million when the program was first inaugurated and have now grown to over $4 million.  This is money in the pockets of parents getting children ready for school and other shoppers.  When coupled with sales offered by many retailers during this week the savings can be even greater.”
