Governor Rell Announces $400,000 for
New Canaan Senior Center Project

Governor M. Jodi Rell announced today that a $400,000 grant to pay for renovations to the Schoolhouse Apartments – a low-income housing complex in New Canaan – is slated for approval at the State Bond Commission meeting next week.

“Roof repairs at the Schoolhouse Apartments are long overdue and, in fact, the situation is now an emergency,” said Governor M. Jodi Rell. “The families living there deserve our support and this is a very wise investment of taxpayer dollars. I am pleased that this funding can quickly be made available.”

The Schoolhouse Apartment complex on South Avenue includes a 74-year-old building with a slate roof that has been badly in need of repair for some time; the problem has recently been exacerbated by heavy rains. Some repairs have been made, but the town has recommended that the roof now be completely replaced.

“I am especially pleased that Governor Rell has stepped in to ensure this urgently needed funding,” said state Representative John Hetherington, who represents New Canaan in the General Assembly. “We owe it to the families living in the Schoolhouse complex to complete this project as quickly as possible.

The Governor also thanked state Senators Judith Freedman and William Nickerson, who also represent New Canaan, for advancing this funding to the Bond Commission agenda.

The Bond Commission will meet Friday, June 9, at 11 a.m. in the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.
