NICKERSON ANNOUNCES PROPOSED FUNDING FOR NEW CANAAN HOUSING ORGANIZATION

Senator William H. Nickerson announced today that Governor Jodi Rell has placed a grant in the amount $400,000 for renovations to the Schoolhouse Apartments in New Canaan on the State Bond Commission agenda.  Senator Nickerson is a member the State Bond Commission.

The funding will be used to replace the building’s 74-year old slate roof which has deteriorated, resulting in severe leaking problems. The Schoolhouse Apartments, owned by the Town of New Canaan, is occupied by residents who meet HUD low-income housing requirements. The building has 41 units, including four units for the handicapped.

"This project is critical to the individuals living at the Schoolhouse Apartments and I am delighted that the request for funding to replace the slate roof is included on this month’s Bond Commission Agenda. I would like to thank Governor Rell for her urgently needed support of this project,” said Senator Nickerson.

The building, erected in 1931, was New Canaan’s first Junior High School.  The Schoolhouse Apartments were converted to housing 13 years ago.  The State Bond Commission is expected to act on the proposal when it meets Friday, June 9th.
