Governor Jodi Rell today announced that she has placed a $500,000 item for dredging of Mill Pond in New Canaan on the Bond Commission agenda for the next Bond Commission meeting to be held June 9.
Senator William H. Nickerson, a member of the Bond Commission issued the following statement:
"I am delighted that Governor Rell has placed the Mill Pond dredging project on the Bond Commission agenda. This project is critically needed in order to restore the degraded pond to its original pristine state. Preserving this vital natural resource should be, and is, a priority in terms of the State's mission in protecting our environment. I know the people of New Canaan will appreciate the State taking a leadership role."
The Governor’s approval of this item follows a meeting in Hartford last year with the Department of Environmental Protection arranged by Senator Nickerson and attended by First Selectman Judy Neville and others. At the meeting Senator Nickerson and First Selectman Neville discussed the significant degradation of Mill Pond and plans to dredge were put forward together with a request to the DEP to fund the dredging under the Clean Water Fund.
