Senator William H. Nickerson (R-Greenwich) joined Governor Jodi Rell at the Boys and Girls Club in Greenwich this afternoon for the Governor’s announcement of her approval of a $500,000 grant to the Boys and Girls Club. This will be on the Bond Commission agenda for the meeting on March 31. Senator Nickerson is a member of the Bond Commission.
Nickerson said, “I am absolutely delighted that Governor Rell has decided to support this wonderful institution. The Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich serves 2,000 children, 65% of whom are from families below the federal poverty level. The grant is tangible testimony of the state’s support for the Club’s core mission, which is to build solid character in boys and girls through learning new skills, playing sports and receiving personal support and guidance.”
The grant will assist in financing the Club’s $19 million rehabilitation of its 62 year old facility on Horseneck Lane. The construction is now complete but finance needs remain to cover the cost. The project included a new swimming pool, a new multi-use indoor ice rink annex and expanded study space equipped with additional computers and rehabilitation work throughout building to bring it into Building Code compliance. |
