NICKERSON WELCOMES RAIL REPLACEMENT PLAN

Senator William H. Nickerson (R-Greenwich) today welcomed the New Haven rail car fleet replacement plan proposed by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and accepted today by Governor Rowland.

Nickerson said, "As per this report Connecticut must move promptly to replace the 30 year old fleet of 340 rail cars plus construction of a new rail car maintenance facility in New Haven to maintain the cars. Replacement of these cars in order to greatly enhance the use of Metro North rail for intrastate commuting is the only way we will work our way out of the unsustainable glut on I-95 and the Merritt Parkway. Current failure to replace the cars is damaging our economy, hurting our environment and threatening road safety."

Nickerson further said, "The plan addresses operating and physical needs but does not address the need to provide a financing plan for the purchase. I look forward to DOT promptly proposing a financing plan so that the purchase orders can be placed."
