Michele Jacklin’s
October 29 column is useful in that it spotlights the proposal
to establish an Indian research center at UConn Law School,
but she does a disservice by completely ignoring the reasons
many of us strongly oppose it.
The problem
is that sooner or later (probably sooner) such a center
will come to rely heavily on funding from present and newly
minted tribal casino interests.
However, the
state and some towns have litigation pending against the
tribes involving a host of lawsuits, appeals, tribal recognition
issues, land annexation and water rights. We all know that
Indian casino interests are using huge political contributions
and phalanxes of lawyers, researchers and PR types to influence
public opinion, government policies and court decisions.
Does anyone doubt that they will use their billions to co-opt
yet another forum to push their casino agenda?
Very truly yours,
