For New Canaan
the grant represents 20% of the total construction cost
of the high school project, which is estimated to cost approximately
$54,000,000. This 20% state share is established by a formula
which provides for the state to share in the cost of new
construction and major renovation of local school projects.
The balance of the cost will be paid with local bond funding.
The present
building was built in 1971. The project includes reconstruction
of the entire building, including the demolition of 4,000
square feet and the addition of 32,870 square feet. The
expansion will include a new cafeteria, a multi-purpose
room and three new classrooms. The mechanical and electrical
systems will be replaced and present building code violations
will be corrected.
Sen. Nickerson said, “This is wonderful news for New
Canaan. The expansion and renovation of the high school
is a vital project, which addresses the need for a first
class educational environment for New Canaan students. I
am very pleased that the state will be New Canaan’s
partner in financing the project.”
The project
has been planned by a seven member Building Committee which
began work in April 2002 under the leadership of Chairman
Christine Wagner. The committee has selected the firm of
Kaestle Boos of New Britain as architects, and the team
of O&G Industries of Torrington and A.P. Construction
out of Stamford as a joint venture to provide construction
management.
The project will be completed in five major phases. The
plans for the project have been completed. The first phase,
which consisted of asbestos removal, was completed this
past summer. The committee is now going to bid on Phase
2, which consists of the steel, framework and foundation.
The local funding process is now beginning, and the project
will go before the New Canaan Board of Education, the Board
of Selectmen, the Board of Finance and the Town Council.
