| Senator
William H. Nickerson (R-Greenwich), Ranking Member of the
Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee, announced that the
Committee has unanimously approved a bill authorizing $10,895,291
as a grant to New Canaan for the renovation of New Canaan
High School. This is part of a bill authorizing a total of
$543,000,000 for school construction grants throughout the
state. The bill is entitled, S.B. 892, “AN ACT CONCERNING
AUTHORIZATION OF STATE GRANT COMMITMENTS FOR SCHOOL BUILDING
PROJECTS” and now goes to the House and Senate for final
action, which is expected prior to the General Assembly’s
constitutional adjournment date on June 4th.
The grant represents
20% of the total construction cost of the project of approximately
$54,000,000. The state share is established by a formula
which provides for the state to share in the cost of new
construction and major renovation of local school projects.
The balance of the cost will be paid with local bond funding.
The present
building was built in 1971. The project includes reconstruction
of the entire building, including the demolition of 4,000
square feet and the addition of 32,870 square feet. The
expansion will include a new cafeteria, a multi-purpose
room and three new classrooms. The mechanical and electrical
systems will be replaced and present building code violations
will be corrected.
Nickerson said, “I am delighted that despite these
difficult times the state has met its commitment to provide
financing for the New Canaan High School project. The building
is 32 years old and needs significant upgrades. The state
funds will help provide a first class setting for New Canaan
High School students to learn and grow for many years to
come.”
MORE
The project has been planned by a seven member Building
Committee, which began work in April 2002 under the leadership
of Chairman Christine Wagner. The committee has selected
the firm of Kaestle Boos of New Britain as architects, and
the team of O&G Construction, out of Stamford, and A.P.
Construction, out of Torrington, as a joint venture to provide
construction management. The design phase for the project
is expected to be completed next month and construction
bids are expected to be awarded by this fall. Once bids
are in the project will go before the New Canaan Board of
Education, the Board of Selectmen, the Board of Finance
and the Town Council.
The project will be completed in 31 phases and is expected
to take approximately 3½ years, with completion scheduled
during the academic year 2006-07. This lengthy phased process
will allow classes and other school functions to be shifted
within the building so that all school functions will continue
uninterrupted while construction is underway. |
