| Senator
William H. Nickerson (R-Greenwich) today issued the following
statement at a press conference held with other transportation
advocates at the Stamford Transportation Center:
“I
am unalterably opposed to ill-conceived strategies being
considered by the Transportation Strategy Board to either
widen the Merritt Parkway or add a deck to I-95. Both of
these proposals assume that getting more cars into Fairfield
County is the solution when in fact it is the problem. No
urban area in the United States has ever driven its way
out of a transportation glut by adding more cars. Instead
we should greatly enhance the use of Metro North Railroad
for intrastate commuting by adding parking, improving schedules,
lowering fares and providing local shuttles. These solutions
will move many more people much faster per dollar than would
be the case with the mountain of money to widen or deck.
Yet with our historical lack of focus on transit we will
never get to reinventing Metro North if we even discuss
road widening and decking.” |
