Senator John A. Kissel (R-Enfield) just this
afternoon sent a letter to Department of Correction
(DOC) acting Commissioner Brian Murphy requesting an
update on the investigation into inmate violence at
Northern. In July, following a string of violent assaults,
Sen. Kissel requested a top-to-bottom investigation
at Northern and in a letter dated July 30th, acting
Commissioner Murphy responded to Senator Kissel’s
request indicating an investigation into operations
at Northern was already underway.
“Following the news of another staff assault
last week and yesterday’s news that an inmate
somehow set fire to his mattress, I thought it important
that the DOC provide us with the current status of their
investigation,” said Sen. Kissel.
“From what I have seen, incidents of violence
have not decreased and while I understand that Northern
is home to our most violent and dangerous criminals,
it is also our super-maximum facility.”
“A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to tour
the facility at Northern with the new warden, Angel
Quiros, to observe the progress being made toward the
removal of the metal lockers. The DOC has always been
very responsive to my requests and I am certainly hopeful
they will be able to provide a status update on their
investigation to date,” concluded Senator
Kissel.
Attached is the letter sent to acting Commissioner
Murphy.
