The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL)
has selected state Sen. John A. Kissel, R-Enfield,
to participate in a national forum to discuss efforts
states are making to reduce corrections costs. “Cost
Cutting Strategies in Corrections,” is an issues
forum taking place as part of the NCSL Legislative Summit
July 22-23 in Philadelphia. Sen. Kissel has been chosen
to participate in several national conferences over
the past two years on issues of corrections and early
childhood education.
Sen. Kissel is scheduled to speak about Connecticut’s
efforts to reduce spending in the area of corrections.
“The area I have represented for the past seventeen
years has more prisons than any other district in Connecticut
and I have had the unique opportunity to be involved
first hand with corrections issue in our state,”
said Sen. Kissel. “Former DOC Commissioner
Theresa Lantz did a tremendous job implementing innovative
and successful programs and the Corrections Officers
who work to keep our prisons safe are of the highest
caliber.”
“I was honored to be chosen to speak at this
conference and am looking forward to sharing what we
have done here in Connecticut to reduce costs, while
still keeping our prisons and our COs safe,” added
Sen. Kissel. “This will also
be a great opportunity for me to learn about what other
states are doing to cut costs and I’m looking
forward to bringing back fresh ideas as we are still
working very hard to tackle our budget problems”.
NCSL requested Sen. Kissel’s participation in
the forum due to his long standing involvement in corrections
reform on both the state and federal level and will
be fully funding his trip.
