Tour Focuses
on Manufacturing Technology Programs
Hartford, CT – State Senator
John A. Kissel (R-Enfield) toured Asnuntuck Community
College (ACC) Thursday highlighting the school’s
facilities in Enfield. The tour focused specifically
on the school’s Manufacturing Technology Program.
“No one can argue that as a nation and as a state
we are facing an economic downturn the likes of which
hasn’t been seen for decades,” said
Senator Kissel. “This downturn is painfully
evident in the staggering number of jobs lost. Just
this week it was reported that the U.S. lost more than
70,000 jobs in one day. But right here in Enfield, Asnuntuck
is hard at work providing crucial training and skills
to its students, positioning them to be incredibly valuable
to the manufacturing and emerging technology industries.”
ACC’s Manufacturing Technologies programs currently
have about 150 students enrolled. It provides industry
training to students in precision machining, electronics
and welding technologies. The program also offers students
internships in the private sector. Students who complete
the associate degree program at ACC can then transfer
to Central Connecticut State University’s School
of Technology to complete a bachelor’s degree.
“In addition to the excellent training students
receive, this program also allows them to continue to
earn a living by making classes available
on a part-time basis ,” said Senator Kissel. “And
in these tough economic times, no doubt continuing to
earn a paycheck will help make ends meet while simultaneously
enabling students to advance their careers.”
Senator Kissel was joined on the tour by Asnuntuck president
Martha McLeod, Ph.D.
“We are extremely proud of this program and our
graduates,” said President McLeod.
“With a graduation rate of over 90%, we turn out
students incredibly equipped to succeed in the private
sector. And after graduation, many go on to land well-paying
jobs. In fact, in a 2006 survey, our graduates were
earning on average $54,000 a year.”
