Bill would add funds to budget to
enhance staffing at all correctional facilities
In a follow up to a letter
he sent to leaders of the legislature’s Appropriations
Committee last week, State Sen. John A. Kissel, R-Enfield,
said today that he has met with the committee co-chairs
and ranking members and is extremely encouraged that a committee
bill that would set aside funding for additional staffing
at the state’s correctional facilities would be raised
when the legislature convenes in February.
“Having
spoken with the co-chairs (Sen. Toni Harp, D-New Haven and
Rep. Denise Merrill, D-Mansfield) and ranking members of
the Appropriations Committee (Sen. David Cappiello, R-Danbury
and Rep. Kevin Delgobbo, R-Naugatuck) I am confident that
they will raise a committee bill on this issue,” said
Sen. Kissel. “The response was very positive and everyone
recognizes the importance of making sure our correctional
facilities are properly staffed. While this is the first
step in the process I am very encouraged that this matter
will get a public hearing so that all voices can be heard.”
Sen. Kissel said that
in light of the expansion of the prison population over
the last several months, additional funds are necessary
to ensure that proper staffing levels are maintained. “This
is a public safety issue. To ensure the safety of our correctional
officers, our communities and the inmates themselves we
need to address this measure this year,” said Sen.
Kissel.
“My initial
hope was that we would have a public hearing on this issue
and after speaking with the co-chairs of the committee I
am confident this will happen,” said Sen. Kissel.
The 2008 legislative session is scheduled to begin on February
6th.
