Senator Tom Herlihy (R-8th) and Representative Kevin Witkos
(R-17th) today announced open space grants for the town of
Canton as part of the ninth round of Connecticut Natural Heritage,
Open Space and Watershed Land Acquisition Grant Program. Canton
received $59,901 for 74 acres of the Uplands Preserve
The majority
of the acquired land in Canton was previously used for agricultural
purposes, making the area an ideal habitat for migratory
songbirds.
“The Uplands
Preserve is a remarkably beautiful area containing hardwood
trees and a seasonal stream. It’s a real asset to
the town and I am happy to see Canton Land Conservation
Trust take the initiative to help preserve the area,”
said Senator Herlihy.
“Preserving
this forested area is vital to preserving the character
and quality of life in Canton. This acquisition represents
a commitment by both the state and the Canton Land Conservation
trust to see that these pristine lands are conserved for
future generations,” said Representative Witkos.
Over
14,000 acres spread out over 201 separate projects were
acquired throughout Connecticut in the first eight rounds
of open space grants. This acquisition increases open space
in Connecticut by 2,19 acreage and brings the total acreage
to 16,196. Connecticut’s overall goal is to preserve
21 percent of Connecticut’s land as open space by
the year 2023. |
