| State Senator Tony Guglielmo, R-Stafford,
has been appointed by Gov. M. Jodi Rell to serve as a member
of a newly created task force that will conduct a comprehensive
study on state mandates and their effect on Connecticut’s
municipalities. According to Sen. Guglielmo, the 16-member
group will meet regularly over the coming months and provide
Gov. Rell with a series of recommendations later this fall. “Relieving our cities
and towns of unnecessary and costly mandates is a great
way for the state to provide financial relief to our municipalities,”
said Sen. Guglielmo. “I look forward to the opportunity
to work with other members of this working group to come
up with ideas and recommendations that will help towns from
spending precious resources on outdated state mandates.”
According to Sen. Guglielmo, the working
group consists of a bi-partisan mix of business, community
and legislative leaders. He said that Connecticut currently
has hundreds of state mandates currently on the books that
he said may not be necessary once reviewed.
“This is about not only
streamlining state government but municipal government as
well,” said Sen. Guglielmo. “The legislature
has passed many laws that have appeared to have minimal
financial impact at the time they were enacted. However,
those types of mandates tend to add up over the years and
when cities and towns are fighting tooth and nail to keep
expenditures down, any type of relief we could provide to
them I believe would be helpful.”
