Senator Tony Guglielmo, R-Stafford, today said that the State
Bond Commission is expected to approve funding in the amount
of $357,700 for state owned flood control dams located on
Middle River and Furnace Brook in Stafford. According to Sen.
Guglielmo, the funding is necessary to construct repairs to
the structures that were built in the early 1960's.
According
to Sen. Guglielmo, the Stafford Flood Control Dams consist
of seven dams that were built as a result of the flood of
1955. "Over the years erosion has taken it's toll on
these structures and that is why repairs are needed at this
time. We cannot underestimate the importance of maintaining
our public works structures. I don't think we can afford
to delay repairs any longer," said Sen. Guglielmo.
"Dams such as these play a huge role in protecting
landowners and the community as a whole from flooding. That
is why I am pleased that the Bond Commission was able to
move this item forward."
According
to Sen. Guglielmo, problems to be addressed with the dams
include improvements to the internal pipe joints for each
principal spillway pipe, access road improvements and vegetation
removal.
"We
have seen what can happen when bridges and dams are not
maintained properly. This funding will ensure the proper
upkeep of these dams and in doing so guarantee the safety
of Stafford residents," said Sen. Guglielmo.
The
State Bond Commission's monthly meeting is scheduled for
this Friday, May
30th, at 10:30 am, at the Legislative Office Building in
Hartford.
