Senator Freedman Favors Letting State Citizens Decide
Whether To Allow 17-Year-Olds To Vote In Primaries

Senator Judith G. Freedman (R-26) endorsed and voted for passage of the resolution to allow Connecticut citizens to decide whether to allow 17-year olds who will turn 18 before an upcoming election to vote in primaries.

Both houses of the legislature have passed this, and it will be on the November ballot.

“If state residents agree, this would be an opportunity for teenagers who will be old enough to vote for the first time in a general election to become involved earlier. It is our hope to encourage these youngsters to get interested and involved in local and state issues and become lifelong, well-informed, voters,” said Senator Freedman.

Under the resolution, Connecticut residents will vote in the upcoming November election whether to amend the state Constitution to permit 17-year olds to vote in primaries if they will be 18 before the upcoming state or municipal election. If a majority of voters approve, the state Constitution will be amended.
