Senator Freedman Announces Legislative Survey Results

Senator Judith G. Freedman (R-26) said that her constituents’ responses to her 2008 legislative survey indicate that she and her constituents see the district needs from the same perspective.

“I want to thank the people who took the time to read and respond to the survey questions. I regard these surveys as an excellent way to find out what the people in my district think about the issues facing our state, especially our part of it

Following are Senator Freedman’s survey questions, followed by the answers that the majority of constituents selected from among the choices offered.

Connecticut’s highways are heavily traveled by trucks. In light of recent serious truck accidents in some of our state, I believe:
The weigh station in Greenwich (I-95) should be open during peak travel times. Currently truck weigh and safety inspections are conducted at more than 30 locations around the state, although some are used more than others. The weigh stations are located along Interstates 84, 91, 95 and Route 8 at various locations throughout the state.

Transportation continues to be a big concern facing Connecticut citizens – especially Fairfield County residents. I believe plans to resolve our transportation issues must include (check all that apply):
Improving and expanding train service.

The General Assembly in 2007 passed legislation to provide a tax credit to businesses that create 10 or more jobs a year. Under this law, businesses receive a tax credit equal to 60% of their state withholding tax for those new jobs. I believe the General Assembly should adopt other pro-jobs proposals, such as:
Reducing burdensome regulations by requiring a comprehensive cost/benefit analysis for every regulation in Connecticut.

Please rank the following issues regarding local property taxes in order of their importance to you, with number one being the most important:
Review all unfunded state mandates on municipalities and eliminate those that contribute to high local property taxes without providing a worthwhile public benefit (i.e. binding arbitration, prevailing wage, class size limits and revaluation).

In recent years, there have been calls for imposing a “millionaire’s tax” on Connecticut’s so-called wealthier residents. This proposal would imposehigher tax rates on taxable incomes above certain thresholds. I believe that imposing such a tax is:
Unfair

Please rank the following issues according to their importance to you and your family, with number one being the most important.
Taxes

Additionally many responders expanded their answers on the various issues.

“These comments are invaluable and help me to incorporate the thinking behind the answers for any legislation that may come forward. Even the negative responses are helpful,” Senator Freedman said.
