| Senator Judith G. Freedman (R-26)
voted in the Senate today in favor of a legislative amendment
calling for the repeal of Connecticut’s existing affordable
housing law. The amendment failed. “Our
existing affordable housing law is more about allowing developers
to force towns to accept developments they don’t want
than it is about promoting the construction of affordable
housing. It is a bad law that allows developers to use the
threat of court action against municipalities to get what
they want. I am very disappointed that the legislature is
seemingly not ready to address this issue,” said Senator
Freedman.
The Republican amendment called for
an outright repeal of the affordable housing statute known
throughout Connecticut as Section 8-30g.
“No one disputes the fact
that affordable housing is necessary, and that municipalities
ought to be encouraged to allow for its construction. However,
Section 8-30g has been shown to be little more than weapon
that provokes a great deal of confrontation, generates a
great deal of legal expenses for towns, and has produced
only 3,300 additional affordable hosing units since it was
adopted 18 years ago,” said Senator Freedman.
“Municipalities want to
step up to the plate and be able to adopt local regulations
that will promote and produce affordable housing units.
Section 8-30g has worked against the municipalities, and
it is really time to make appropriate changes in that law,’
said Senator Freedman.
