Fairfield County Caucus Petitions FERC To Deny Broadwater LNG Project

Senator Judith G. Freedman (R-26) and members of the General Assembly’s bipartisan Fairfield County Legislative Caucus sent a petition to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to deny the application by Broadwater Energy, LLC to install a floating liquefied natural gas terminal 11 miles off the Connecticut coastline in Long Island Sound.

“Like hundreds of Connecticut residents, we have already made known our opposition to installing a LNG facility in Long Island Sound. However, we believe it is important that FERC understands that so many of us are standing together in a unified effort to protect the interests of our constituents on this very important issue,” said Senator Freedman.

he petition states:

"We, the members of the Fairfield County caucus, representing towns along southwestern Long Island Sound, as well as inland towns oppose the installation of a liquefied natural gas facility off the coast of Connecticut in the Long Island Sound. We ask FERC to deny Broadwater’s request to build such a facility in such a fragile area as Long Island Sound. There are not only implications that negatively impact the Sound and its health, but also gravely endanger the people of this state and New York by the sheer size and scope of the project. Public safety should be the first consideration of a project of this magnitude."

The petition is signed by the following Fairfield County legislators: Senator Judith G. Freedman, Senator David Cappiello, Senator Bob Duff, Senator Bill Finch, Senator Andrew McDonald, Senator John McKinney, Rep. Toni Boucher, Rep. Tom Drew, Rep. Kim Fawcett, Rep. Livvy Floren, Rep. Gerald Fox, Rep. Lile Gibbons, Rep. Janice Giegler, Rep. Bob Godfrey, Rep. John Harkins, Rep. Jack Hennessey, Rep. Larry Miller, Rep. Joe Mioli, Rep. Chris Perone, Rep. Dolly Powers, Rep. TR Rowe, Rep. John Ryan, Rep. David Scribner, Rep. Jim Shapiro, Rep. John Stripp, Rep. William Tong, Rep. Christel Truglia.
