Senator Freedman Joins Senate Republican Leadership In Calling For Suspension Of Energy Tax

Senator Judith G. Freedman (R-26) today joined the Senate Republican Caucus in calling for a suspension of the Public Service Company (PSC) Tax on gas and electric bills through June 2007 as a way to provide short-term relief to Connecticut families and businesses. The full Senate Republican Caucus will kick off the 2007 Legislative Session by introducing their proposal to save ratepayers estimated $100 million in utility bills during the first six months of the new year.

“We understand that people are upset about the escalating costs of heating their homes and running their businesses. That is why we are calling on the General Assembly to address energy issues first, before we take up anything else in the upcoming session. Having said that, we know the legislature is not always quick to act on even the most pressing matters. Immediately suspending the PSC tax would provide a measure of relief while we work out a more long term solution,” said Senator Freedman.

Senator Freedman said that the General Assembly owes it to state residents and businesses to act quickly on the Senate Republican Caucus proposal.

“When the rate increases for Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating take effect next month, our state will have one of the highest, if not the highest, electricity rates in the nation. We know that Connecticut ratepayers can save about $100 million on their bills between January and June if we act quickly to suspend the PSC tax. Let’s do the right thing,” said Senator Freedman.
