Senator Judith G. Freedman (R-26) will be a presenter on a panel discussion, “NCLB: Are States Being Asked To Do Too Much With Too Little?” The Educational Policy Steering Committee of the Council of State Governments/Eastern Regional Conference is sponsoring the discussion at its annual meeting and regional policy forum. The panel discussion will take place during the conference in Philadelphia on Tuesday, August 1st
Senator Freedman is the ranking member of the legislature’s Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee and a Deputy Senate Republican Leader; Freedman also serves as the state’s steering committee member to the Education Commission of the States and is former Senate chair of the Education Committee. Freedman is also a member of the executive committee CSGERC.
Freedman said: “The federal ‘No Child Left Behind Act’ is an important issue in Connecticut, as it is in states across the country. I believe everyone will benefit from a candid discussion of this policy and what it means for our states and the children we serve.” Freedman will discuss Connecticut's case against the federal government with respect to perceived unfunded mandates in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The presentation will include the rationale as to how and why Connecticut brought about this suit.
The panel discussion will be moderated by Pennsylvania's Executive Deputy Secretary of Education, Thomas Gluck, and will feature, as presenters, Ann Reale, Commissioner of Massachusetts' Department of Early Education and Care, Thomas Hanna, Senior Vice President of Human Resources for the School District of Philadelphia, and Senator Freedman. |
