Senator Judith G. Freedman (R-26) announced that the State Bond Commission is expected to approve a $400,000 grant to replace the slate roof of a HUD low-income, not for profit housing organization located in New Canaan. The State Bond Commission will meet on Friday, June 9th.
“The Schoolhouse Apartments’ original slate roof is 74-years old and, not surprisingly, deterioration and erosion has resulted in severe leaking problems. I, along with other area legislators, have advocated for state help to fix this problem, I would like to thank Governor M. Jodi Rell for supporting this project,” said Senator Freedman.
The Schoolhouse Apartments building is a former New Canaan middle school owned by the town that has been made available to the not-for-profit housing organization since 1990 under 99-year lease. The facility has 41 units, including four units for the handicapped. Currently, it is 100% occupied by residents who meet HUD low-income housing requirements. |
