SENATOR DELUCA AND REP. PISCOPO ANNOUNCE FUNDING FOR
THOMASTON PARKS

State Senate Republican Leader Louis C. DeLuca (R-Woodbury) and State Rep. John Piscopo
(R-Thomaston) announced today that the state bond commission has approved a grant in the amount of $87,000 to the town of Thomaston to construct handicap accessible bathrooms at Nystrom Park and Highwood Farms Park. The parks, which receive hundreds of visitors a day during the summer, currently use portable rest facilities that have proven to be unsanitary and insufficient.

"Nystrom Park and Highwood Farms Park serve an important role to the people of Thomaston as recreational centers where residents can bring their families and where local youth sports organizations have a place to play," said Senator DeLuca. "I am pleased Governor Rell and the State Bond Commission understood the importance of providing a small town like Thomaston with the funds needed to upgrade these parks. Our rural communities have to rely almost exclusively on property taxes to take care of these kinds of quality-of-life projects, so this state funding should allow the town to complete these upgrades without having to pass the cost onto the taxpayers."

"I've been working with Senator DeLuca and the Thomaston Board of Selectmen to secure this grant for several months," Representative Piscopo said. "The present restrooms at Highwood Farms and Nystrom's parks are outmoded and inadequate and need to be replaced with modern facilities that are accessible to everyone. This grant will help ensure that badly needed upgrades to two of our town's most popular and widely used recreational areas are completed in the near future. I'd like to thank Governor Rell and the Bond Commission for their support for this worthwhile project. I congratulate the Board of Selectmen, Senator DeLuca and everyone else who worked on this grant on a successful outcome to a team effort."
