Senate Republican Leader Louis C. DeLuca (R-Woodbury) was
honored by the Connecticut Alliance of YMCA’s as a “Legislator
of the Year” for 2003. The organization recognized the
top ranking Senate Republican for his “support of the
mission and purpose of the YMCA,” particularly in supporting
legislation that established tax-exempt status for charitable
housing.
“Connecticut’s YMCA’s
do a terrific job of providing their communities with a
reliable and effective center for charitable work and volunteerism,
and I believe the General Assembly should make a priority
of supporting their efforts,” said Senator DeLuca.
“I think the YMCA is the sort of organization that
should be receiving accolades rather than handing them out,
but I appreciate this award and I look forward to working
with them in the future.”
Connecticut’s
YMCA’s serve more than 300,000 adults, children and
families throughout the state, and in the year 2003 provided
more than $11,000,000 for scholarships, subsidies and other
community services. The organization is entirely volunteer
based, volunteer funded and volunteer led. Local YMCA’s
work directly with local school districts and provide an
array of outreach services aimed at low and middle-income
families. |
