SENATOR DELUCA: WOODBURY REFERENDUM VALIDATED BY SENATE
State Senate Republican Leader Louis C. DeLuca (R-Woodbury) announced today that the State Senate voted unanimously to validate the July 30, 2002 referendum held in Woodbury, opening the way for a long planned effort to relocate several town offices and establish a new senior center. The action was necessary due to the fact that the town failed to post legal notice following the referendum, a technicality that could have left the vote at risk to a legal challenge. The Woodbury project involves relocating several town offices to the first floor of the vacant SBC building and opening the new senior center on the second floor.

“It would be unfortunate to allow a small flaw in the process jeopardize the decision made by Woodbury’s citizens during the town referendum,” said Senator DeLuca. “We hear a lot of talk about how important it is to get people to vote, but I think the first priority is protecting the integrity of elections for those who do vote, and this is a perfect example. The old senior center has been cramped for years, and with the validation of the referendum, we can finally get this project moving.”

According to Senator DeLuca, the action in the State Senate must still obtain approval from the House of Representative, which could vote on this measure as early as next week.

“I look forward to working with 1st Selectman Dick Crane and the rest of Woodbury’s municipal officials to assist in getting this important project underway as soon as possible,” added Senator DeLuca.
