Senate Republicans Announce Comprehensive Jobs Growth Initiative

Senate GOP Proposal Aims to Create Jobs, Eliminate Counterproductive Regulations,
and Attract Next Generation Industries to Connecticut

Hartford, CT – Senate Republican Leader Louis C. DeLuca (R-Woodbury), Senate Republican Leader Pro Tem John McKinney (R-Fairfield), and Senator Dan Debicella (R-Shelton) today released the details of a comprehensive jobs growth initiative that the Senate Republican Caucus will work to enact during this legislative session.  The proposal, detailed in the attached power point, aims to: help existing businesses create new jobs; eliminate counterproductive regulations; and attract new "next generation" industries to Connecticut.

“High taxes and over-regulation are driving industries and workers from our state and weakening our economy,” said Senator DeLuca.  “This is a growing problem that cannot be ignored.  If we don’t create a more business-friendly environment in Connecticut, we aren’t going to have the tax revenue to pay for all of the other important initiatives this legislature is working on.”

Senator McKinney said, “The General Assembly will be taking up a number of important bills this spring aimed at improving public health and education, mitigating the high cost of energy, and protecting and preserving our environment.  These are all worthy initiatives, but how do we pay for them?  The majority party says ‘raise taxes.’  We’re saying there’s a better way.  We’re saying keep taxes low and grow the tax base.  The Senate Republican jobs growth initiative is designed to grow the tax base through a series of proposals designed to foster economic growth and create jobs.”

Senators DeLuca and McKinney credited Senator Dan Debicella (R-21) with crafting the proposal with the help of the Senate Republican Caucus and Connecticut’s business community.

Senator Debicella commented on each of the three proposals contained within the jobs growth initiative:

  1. “This legislature, this year, has the opportunity to pass laws that will simultaneously rejuvenate our cities and make Connecticut a central hub of next generation industries such as fuel cells, bio-technology and nanotechnology," said Senator Debicella.
  2. “We can make changes to our tax system that encourages existing businesses to expand, thus creating new jobs.
  3. “And we can make Connecticut a more attractive place for businesses by thoroughly reviewing the costs and benefits of all of our state regulations.  Connecticut businesses are suffering death by a thousand cuts because of regulations that often have the unintended consequences of discouraging expansion and job creation.  We need to reevaluate all of these regulations and eliminate some of them if necessary.  I urge my colleagues in the General Assembly to help pass these important reforms.”
