Sen. Cook to Appear on Beyond the Headlines to Discuss Saving the Groton Sub Base

State Senator Cathy Cook (R-Mystic) will be appearing on Fox-61 TV's Beyond the Headlines to discuss the Base Realignment and Closure Committee's (BRAC) decision on Wednesday not to close the Groton Submarine Base. Senator Cook will appear along with John Markowicz, the chairman of the Sub Base Realignment Coalition , and Hartford Courant columnist Stan Simpson. Rick Hancock hosts the program, which airs this Sunday morning at 8:30am on the Comcast, Adelphia, and Eastern Cable Systems.

"Certainly, when the final decision was announced, you could hear a single sigh of relief from the people in Groton, Eastern Connecticut and across the state. It truly was a great day for the state and the culmination of a lot of hard work and dedication on the part of local, state, and federal officials as well as the citizens of Connecticut."

The three guests will also discuss future developments at the Groton Submarine Base.

"While we are all very grateful that the base will remain open, we cannot let our excitement distract us from the next step. Although this was the last of the base closure rounds, we still have to think about the future and what we as a state can do to increase the value of the base to the nation, which includes expanding the use of submarines in our military. Already, we are advocating that the federal government construct more than the current one submarine per year. In addition, we are looking towards increasing the use of submarines in our country's anti-terrorism efforts and covert operations."

Senator Cook is the Chief Deputy Republican Leader of the Senate and represents Griswold, Groton, North Stonington, Plainfield, Preston, Sterling, Stonington, and Voluntown.
