Senator Cook Is Guest On "Face The State" and "On The Record"
Senator Cathy Cook, R-Mystic, discusses efforts to save the U.S. Naval Submarine Base in Groton as a guest of weekend news shows " Face The State" on WFSB-3, and "On The Record" on CPTV.
"Seeing our submarine base included among U.S. Defense Secretary Rumsfeld's recommended closures was a shock. Fortunately, we are prepared to fight. We've been recommended for closure before, and we know what we have to do. When commissioners visit the sub base, reportedly on June 1 st , we'll be ready to make our case for keeping the base open. When Governor Rell leads the state's testimony before the Base Realignment and Closure Commission's regional hearing in Boston on July 6 th , our arguments for saving the base will be convincing," said Senator Cook.
"We have not lost this fight, and we will not lose. The spirit of cooperation between Democrats and Republicans, and the willingness of everyone involved, from community and government leaders to labor and business interests all across the state, is impressive. Connecticut does not want to see this base closed, and everyone is committed to doing what it takes to convince the federal government of its importance, not only to our state, but also to the nation. It makes no sense to close this base. I believe that, ultimately, we will succeed in convincing the military and the federal decision makers that it is in everyone's best interest to keep it open," added Senator Cook.
Senator Cook, along with Senator Andrea Stillman, D-Waterford, will discuss the Groton submarine base issue as guests on " On The Record " with Steve Kotchko to be shown on CPTV at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, and at 11 p.m. Monday.
