State Senator David Cappiello (R-Danbury) and Representative John Frey (R-Ridgefield) announced today that the State Bond Commission has approved $410,000 that will help finance the purchase of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Danbury for use at the Midtown Campus of Western Connecticut State University. The funding will help expand WestConn, while allowing Holy Trinity to continue with its plans to move to Joes Hill Road in Danbury.
"Purchasing Holy Trinity Church allows Western Connecticut State University to further pursue its master plan, while allowing Fr. Luke Mihaly to grow his parish to its full potential," said Senator Cappiello. "It was becoming increasingly difficult for Holy Trinity parishioners to attend services, due to a lack of parking available them. I would like to thank Governor M. Jodi Rell for understanding the importance and necessity of this grant, and acting on it in a very timely manner."
"Western Connecticut State University has flourished over the last ten years resulting in expansions at both the midtown and west-side campuses," said Rep. Frey, who serves as an Assistant Minority Leader. "Holy Trinity had become an island amidst the university's expanded campus. This acquisition will permit a further expansion of programs at Western, as well as allow the congregation to grow with the construction of their new church on Joe's Hill Road. Fr. Mihaly demonstrated great patience in allowing the state to pursue this project at its pace."
"We have done everything the state has asked of us and we are happy that the funding has been approved at long last," said Father Luke. "We are pleased to close this chapter in the history of the Church and continue on. In addition, I would like to thank Senator Cappiello and Representative Frey who have helped us along the way, and particularly Governor Jodi Rell for releasing the funds." |
