The town of Sherman will be awarded a $500,000 grant at Thursday's State Bond Commission meeting according to State Senator David Cappiello (R-24 th ) and Representative Mary Ann Carson (R-108 th ), who made the announcement today. The money will be used to preserve and restore the historic Old Town Hall, which also serves as the town's Senior Center. Funding is distributed through the Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP), which awards economic development, community conservation and quality of life projects for localities that are ineligible to receive urban action bonds.
"Our seniors deserve the best equipped building we can provide them. This funding will help improve handicapped accessibility as well as provide more space for local seniors who seek to take advantage of the many wonderful programs and facilities provided by the Town of Sherman," said Senator Cappiello.
Both the interior and exterior renovation must be coordinated in order to maintain the integrity of the historic appearance, while also adhering to the requirements of a modern Senior Center.
"I've been happy to help secure this funding," said Rep. Carson. " I certainly thank Governor Rell for her commitment to the project. In addition, to providing enhanced services for seniors, the remodeling will help preserve a key part of Sherman's history." |
