Senator Cappiello Pledges to Prevent Casinos in Danbury
In light of the Bureau of Indian Affairs granting federal recognition to the Connecticut-based Schaghticoke Tribal Nation today, suggestions have begun that the tribe is considering building a casino in the Danbury area. State Senator David Cappiello (R-Danbury) today promised to fight efforts to open any new casino in the Greater Danbury area.

“I will reserve comment on the awarding of federal recognition until I have the chance to read the decision in its entirety,” said Senator Cappiello. “However, if the Schaghticokes do decide to move forward with efforts to build a casino, I will work with both state and local elected officials to ensure that no additional casinos are opened in Danbury.”

Senator Cappiello added that there are significant financial, social, and transportation problems that would result from a casino in Western Connecticut.

“We do not need to turn Connecticut into ‘Las Vegas – East.’ Another casino is the last thing Connecticut needs as it would destroy the character of the Constitution State,” continued Senator Cappiello. “It would cause tremendous traffic difficulties as well as result in an increase in crime – problems that we do not want in Western Connecticut. Plus, a new casino would be a huge financial drain on the area and the state as a whole.”
