A bill
that would allow charitable and non-profit organizations to
accept credit cards as payment for raffle moved one step closer
to passage this week when the General Law Committee reported
Senate Bill 880 favorably out of committee. Senator David
Cappiello (R-Danbury) has pursued this specific legislation
for years and is pleased the bill is moving forward.
“This legislation will only help the many worthy causes
across Connecticut that use raffle ticket sales as a means
of fund raising,” explained Senator Cappiello, who serves
as Ranking Member on General Law. “Nearly everyone makes
use of a credit card at one time or another, so it only makes
sense to allow people to use them to purchase raffle tickets.”
A phone call from Gary Kozak, President and CEO of the Regional
YMCA of Western Connecticut in Brookfield was the impetus
for Senator Cappiello’s pursuit of this legislation.
“Mr.
Kozak told me that the YMCA’s raffle ticket sales
dipped drastically after state officials told them they
were not to accept credit cards as payment. When a law serves
only to hinder the work of quality organizations like the
YMCA, a change is most certainly in order,” said Senator
Cappiello.
State
Senate Bill 880, An Act Promoting Raffle Ticket Sales, now
awaits action by the State Senate.
