The Las Vegas
Nights statute, which allows churches and civic and charitable
organizations to hold certain fundraisers, has been used
as a legal basis to establish casinos in Connecticut. Proponents
of repealing the statute believe it would prevent the establishment
of new casinos in Connecticut and are calling on the State
Legislature to address the issue in a special legislative
session.
“The establishment
of new casinos in Connecticut has remained a hot topic for
years here in Western Connecticut,” said Senator Cappiello.
“This hearing, and the others like it across the state,
will help us as legislators better gauge people’s
opinions on this issue.”
“I’m
hopeful we have a good turnout on the 16th,” said
Representative Carson. “The possibility of new casinos
being established in Connecticut is very important to people
throughout the state but in Western Connecticut, people
seem especially concerned. This is an excellent opportunity
for people to personally present their views to legislators
without having to drive to Hartford.”
