State Senator-Elect Sam Caligiuri has been named by Senate Republican Leader Louis C. DeLuca, R-Woodbury, to serve on five legislative committees, including the Select Committee on Aging and the Elementary & Secondary Education Committee, when he is sworn into office next month to represent the 16th Senatorial District.
“I asked Senator DeLuca to appoint me to the education and aging committees because these two committees deal with some of the issues that are most important to the people I will represent. During the past several months, senior citizens told me they desperately need tax relief and parents told me that nothing is more important to them than the quality of education their children receive. I have already talked about my desire to expand and revise the local property tax freeze program for seniors passed by the legislature earlier this year. Also, I have had extensive conversations with parents about the need to ensure that our education dollars are spent prudently and efficiently, and that we maintain accountability in our public school system. As a member of the Governor’s Commission on Education Finance, I am already working toward the goal of bringing more fairness and equity to how we distribute school funding to Connecticut communities. Serving on these legislative committees is a wonderful opportunity to pursue these issues,” said Senator-Elect Caligiuri.
Senator-Elect Caligiuri will serve as the ranking, or leading, Republican senator on the Select Committee on Aging, as well as on the General Law Committee. In addition to these committees, and the Elementary & Secondary Education Committees, Senator-Elect Caligiuri will serve as a member of the Internship Committee and the Regulation Review Committee.
In addition to his committee appointments, Senator-Elect Caligiuri has been named by Senate Republican Leader DeLuca to serve as an Assistant Minority Leader.
“I am honored by the confidence being shown in me by Senator DeLuca and the caucus, and I am looking forward to the opportunity to get to work. There are a great many important issues facing Connecticut, and our quality of life – and the quality of life for future generations – depends on how we address them. I have a lot of ideas, and I have been privileged to meet many people in the 16th District who also have terrific ideas. I want to start out by encouraging my constituents to continue sharing their concerns, and their ideas, with me,” said Senator-Elect Caligiuri.
Beginning on January 3, 2007, Senator-Elect Caligiuri will represent the 16th Senatorial District, which includes Waterbury, Wolcott, Southington and Cheshire. |
