Asks Parole Board To Recommend Action To Avoid Similar Situations
In Future
Senator Sam Caligiuri,
R-16, today called on the State Board of Pardons and Paroles
to review the decision to release the suspects involved
in yesterday’s home invasion and triple homicide in
Cheshire, and to recommend action for preventing future
tragedies.
“Issuing judgment and laying blame
is counterproductive. Nevertheless, three people are dead
and the suspects were judged by the state’s parole
board just a few months ago to be appropriate candidates
for early supervised release. We owe it to the victims,
their families and friends, and to the public to find out
why these suspects were seen as ready for supervised parole
and what action the state can take to prevent such a horrific
thing from happening again,” said Senator Caligiuri.
Senator Caligiuri, whose district includes
a portion of Cheshire, said he reacted with the same shock
and disbelief as did everyone else who heard about the crime
watching the news last night and reading this morning’s
newspapers.
“My heart goes out to Dr. Petit
and to everyone who knows and loves his family. As a husband
and a father, I can well imagine his grief and the incredible
sorrow he will always carry with him. We cannot change what
happened, but we can look for answers and, just maybe, we
can learn enough from this tragedy to prevent something
like this from happening again,” said Senator Caligiuri.
Senator Caligiuri said he has no doubt
that members of the State Board of Pardons and Paroles are
saddened and horrified by the tragedy, and by the fact that
the suspects were under their jurisdiction.
“I look forward to hearing
from the State Board of Pardons and Paroles to see if there
is anything we can do to prevent this kind of tragedy from
occurring again,” said Senator Caligiuri.
